Stories like this are sad but what makes it sadder is this is how I thought when I was a teenager, growing up with all the Viet Nam vet movies, like First Blood, Predator etc. I later leanred a lot of the movie stuff was BS and then joined the Army and found out more was BS.
Now we have all these air chair warriors out there watching these types of shows thinking they can make it in the woods with a few items. Well you can if you know how, not just watched how. I have had to camp with just what I had in my pockets because we lost the compass and it was close to dark. I was I think 14 and we built a fire then made beds of boughs. We followed the river back to a main road and home. No big deal but we learned a lot.
Bottom line is if you have not really tested your skills do so in a real but control places, meaning near your main camp or car/truck, in case things go wrong. At winter survival I had the option of heading to my truck if it got too bad, made it fine.
Now if this guy knew how to make a scout fire or could have gotten to his car he would have been fine. If you want to test yourself maybe pack in some items you wont use unless things get bad, like a sleeping bag or heater of some kind. Have a way to call for help, cell phone or something like that.
I plan to take my family camping this weekend, missed last weekend, thing came up, and practice skills I have learned and teach them to my family. We will be near our truck and we have a tent with w wood stove. We can run around all day with out much gear learn things then have a warm safe place to sleep.

It blows my mind how many people go out with nothing and think they can survive. Stroud showed how to survive and what to do and hinted around at how damn hard it was. His DVDs show him with locals in every location learning things.
A few friends and were dumb and went out when I first got into more primitive camping, and low and behold we froze are butts off on a what was supposed to be a warm night. Luckly we werent dumb enough not to bring extra stuff.
